P01xx Codes: Fuel & Air Metering
This series of codes points to issues with your engine's ability to create the right air-fuel mixture.
Overview of P01xx Codes
The P01xx codes are critical because they directly impact your engine's performance and efficiency. They often relate to sensors that measure air and fuel. An issue here can be a direct cause of a P0420 code.
Common P01xx Codes:
- P0130-P0167: These codes relate to Oxygen (O2) sensors. They can indicate a sensor malfunction, a circuit problem, or slow response time. A faulty O2 sensor is a common cause of a false P0420 code.
- P0171: System Too Lean (Bank 1). This means there is too much air and not enough fuel. Causes include vacuum leaks, a bad mass airflow sensor, or clogged fuel injectors.
- P0172: System Too Rich (Bank 1). This means there is too much fuel and not enough air. Causes include leaking fuel injectors or a bad fuel pressure regulator.
How They Relate to P0420
If your engine is running too rich (P0172) or too lean (P0171), it can damage the catalytic converter over time. Unburnt fuel from a rich condition can overheat the converter, while a lean condition can cause high temperatures. Always fix P01xx codes before addressing a P0420 code.
